How Heat Pump Water Heaters Work
They work by pulling heat from the surrounding air and transferring it to the water in the tank.
When the ambient temperature surrounding the water heater isn’t adequate, the water heater switches to and electric heating element to make up the difference.
When the ambient temperature is high enough to heat the water without the electric element, it is roughly 60% more efficient than water heated by electrical resistance.
Manufacturers have been successful in lowering the minimum temperature in which heat pump water heaters will operate in heat pump mode. Many will continue to operate efficiently with ambient temperatures as low as 35 degrees or less.
Heat pump water heaters also allow you to preheat water during times of the day when electricity is less expensive and store it in the tank for use during peak times when costs are higher.
